Spotlight on Wellsburg Retaining Wall

The Wellsburg Retaining Wall is a $131 million design-build project by the West Virginia Department of Highways that provides a new tied arch bridge over the Ohio River, connecting Route 2 in Wellsburg, West Virginia with Route 7 in Brilliant, Ohio.

A new 4,000-foot-long retaining wall extending north-south along the West Virginia side will accommodate road widening and stabilize the soil and rock slopes above, which are susceptible to creep and eventual slope instabilities. Schnabel provided design of the retaining wall, which consists of soldier piles and lagging laterally supported by tiebacks.

This project illustrates Schnabel’s substantial design capabilities, as recognized by ENR’s Top 500 Design Firm List. Year-over-year, we continue to move up in the rankings and now sit at #189 on 2022’s prestigious list!
