Spotlight on the Amtrak Susquehanna River Rail Bridge

The Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Project aims to enhance rail capacity, safety, and connectivity by replacing the century-old, two-track bridge over the Susquehanna River with twin two-track bridges. Spanning Harford and Cecil Counties in Maryland, this critical transportation link is the longest moveable bridge on the Northeast Corridor. Schnabel was engaged to provide preliminary geotechnical engineering and subsurface exploration, playing a key role in the project’s design.

Schnabel’s work included geotechnical and environmental studies, extensive subsurface investigations, seismic and geophysical studies, and environmental services. The team conducted numerous borings on land and water, and rock coring up to 200 feet deep. Schnabel’s findings informed the design of the foundations and other supporting infrastructure.
