Spotlight On: Big Hill Lake
Schnabel Engineering partnered with Gracon LLC as a design-build team to modernize the USACE’s Big Hill Lake in southeastern Kansas. Originally built in 1974 for flood control and water supply, the outlet works required significant upgrades—including the replacement of eight cast iron slide gates.
Schnabel provided comprehensive design and engineering services for this project, which included replacing the gates, actuators, structural analyses, installing a new overhead hoist, and fabricating bulkheads complete with a mechanical lifting beam. We also supported construction through shop drawing reviews, lifting plans, and commissioning efforts.
We’re proud to contribute to a project that supports safe, reliable infrastructure, protects communities, and ensures access to essential water resources.
