Schnabel Selected to Design the CapEx Drainage Tunnels
Schnabel is proud to announce that it is a core member of the winning team selected to design the CapEx Drainage Tunnels Project in Austin, Texas. The project is a critical first step in the implementation of Texas Department of Transportation’s $4.5B Capital Express Central Project to widen and lower the grade of IH-35 to improve vehicle capacity and cross-city connectivity for surface streets and pedestrians in the downtown Austin area. The 22-ft finished diameter, 33,000-ft long TBM-mined drainage tunnel system will capture and convey stormwater beneath the redesigned IH-35 and Cesar Chavez Street, ultimately connecting to a pump station that will discharge flows into the Colorado River. Other project features include 10 drop and maintenance shafts, and 1,300-ft of 12-20-ft diameter adit connections. Schnabel has been retained by TXDOT and prime designer BGE to provide full design analyses, plans, specifications, and a Geotechnical Baseline Report for the tunnels and shafts.
