Schnabel Celebrates ITA Silver Award for Washington Metro Yellow Line Rehabilitation Project
Schnabel is pleased to share that the Washington Metro Yellow Line Rehabilitation Project received a silver award in the “Project of the Year” category from the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) at the 2025 ITA Tunnelling Awards and Southeastern Europe Tunnelling Conference in Belgrade.
Known as the Metro, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is the leading public transportation provider across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
Led by contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co., and designers RK&K and Schnabel Engineering, and owned by WMATA, this project focused on rehabilitating two 1,500-foot-long steel-lined tunnels originally constructed over 40 years ago and ultimately restoring their structural integrity and extending their service life by another 50 years.
Schnabel Engineering served as the Engineer of Record for the tunnel structural repair – with Schnabel employees Matthew Goff, Stephen Miller, and John Healy leading inspection and design efforts.
