Schnabel Celebrates International Latina Engineers Week

To celebrate International Latina Engineers Week, we’re pleased to feature employee-owner, Maria Jose Hernandez, PE. Read her perspective on the engineering profession and her work at Schnabel.

“When I graduated from high school, I wanted to become a doctor. My father changed my mind saying that engineering was the ‘career of the future’. In the end, I found that I really liked Civil Engineering!

The best part of my job is the satisfaction I get when I see my designs become a reality—especially when it’s with amazing infrastructure work. I also like the way my work improves people’s lives by building roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, etc.

I am grateful to this country, as well as to Schnabel, for the opportunity to progress in my career. As a woman and a Latina in civil engineering, I feel respected and valued at Schnabel, a company that promotes diversity in the workforce—we are a multicultural company. It’s important to me to give back by supporting Latino coworkers at Schnabel and beyond. Schnabel is like a family in that we, as employees and coworkers, support each other. Schnabel also offers the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging projects.”
