RiverRenew Wins 2025 Tunnel Achievement Award

We’re proud to celebrate the RiverRenew Program—the largest infrastructure project in Alexandria’s history—being named the 2025 Tunnel Achievement Award winner by TBM: Tunnel Business Magazine and the Breakthroughs in Tunneling Short Course.

At the heart of RiverRenew is the 2.2-mile Waterfront Tunnel, designed to capture and treat combined sewer overflows before they reach the Potomac River and local waterways. Once complete in 2026, the system will prevent over 130 million gallons of untreated wastewater from entering the environment each year, delivering transformative water quality benefits for the region.

As a key member of the Owner’s Advisor team, Schnabel Engineering supported AlexRenew and Brown and Caldwell from concept to construction—providing planning, geotechnical investigations, tunnel alignment selection, procurement support, and construction management.

We extend our congratulations and gratitude to the entire project team, including AlexRenew, Traylor-Shea Joint Venture, Jacobs, and Brown and Caldwell.
