South Abingdon 138 kV Extension
To improve local electric reliability, AEP is constructing a 138 kV transmission line between its Abingdon and South Abingdon substations in Washington County. Schnabel is on site during the excavation of foundations to evaluate subsurface conditions as encountered, to compare them to the conditions expected by the designers, and to relay that information to Power Engineers to evaluate whether re-design is appropriate.
The new transmission line mainly consists of single pole structures with drilled pier concrete foundations. Two structures are two-pole overhead and underground transition structures with drilled pier concrete foundations. Planned drilled pier diameters vary between 4.5 ft and 9 ft, with planned embedment depths varying between 16.5 ft and 56 ft.
