Completing an entire city block dedicated to the care of kids, the new VCU Health Inpatient Children’s Hospital consolidates inpatient and emergency care to one location. The 16-story, 500,000 sf hospital, with four levels of underground parking, is part of a comprehensive plan to address the needs of the community and state, becoming a destination for children and their families as well as for research and education.

During the design phase of the project, Schnabel provided geotechnical, geostructural, geophysical, and seismic analysis. During construction, we performed geotechnical and geostructural construction administration services, environmental services, and special inspection services for the support of excavation construction. We also provided mat foundation subgrade inspection services and observed drilled shaft construction for the pedestrian bridge.

Downtown Richmond sites with deep excavation present unique challenges. On this project, we provided seamless services throughout design and construction. As the project demanded, we were able to provide additional services such as environmental sampling, analytical testing, and recommendations for dealing with petroleum-impacted soil and water when these materials were encountered during construction. This project highlights the broad range of services that we can provide as a trusted team member.
