CCR Surface Impoundment Shoreline Stabilization
Shoreline Stabilization of CCR surface impoundments is crucial in preventing environmental contamination and protection of sensitive waterways. Schnabel’s work in this area is extensive, as we have provided indepth shoreline stabilization analysis and design services for CCR impoundments adjacent to sensitive waterways throughout the mid-Atlantic.
Integrating our comprehensive CCR impoundment knowledge and leveraging our decades-long dam engineering expertise, Schnabel has spearheaded erosional and structural stability corrective measures on numerous CCR impoundments at various active and inactive power generating facilities. Our services in this area include:
- Performing hydrologic, hydraulic, and geotechnical engineering analyses
- Preparation of design options reports, plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates for selected alternatives
- Environmental permitting support
- Engineering support during construction
Our work involved the implementation of a multitude of mitigating measures, including sheet pile walls, riprap armoring, flattened slopes, soil nail walls, living shorelines and drainage improvements. Each alternative is evaluated with respect to longevity, cost, schedule, environmental considerations, and the minimization of impact to existing wetlands and surface waters. These types of projects have aggressive timelines to design, permit, and construct stability improvements driven by the need to mitigate risks and ensure long-term stability.
Since 2011, Schnabel has provided shoreline stabilization for more than 6,000 feet of at-risk shoreline in the mid-Atlantic region, including full design, permitting support, and engineering support services during construction. Our work has resulted in the rehabilitation of many critical slopes, preserving the natural environment along many mid-Atlantic waterways while protecting against potential negative impacts from dated CCR storage practices at former and current power stations.
