Campbells Creek Coal Refuse Disposal Facility
This West Virginia coal facility needed to convert an approved underground slurry injection and refuse pile to an above ground slurry impoundment on an emergency basis. They called on Schnabel.
Schnabel provided design, consultation, and periodic specialty construction support for this life-of-mine coal refuse disposal facility. The resulting refuse disposal facility included a six-stage, 350-foot-high coal refuse tailings impoundment. Impoundment stages were built using coarse coal refuse by the centerline and upstream construction methods. Construction support included periodic site inspections, specialty monitoring for critical dam elements, and assistance with spillway pipe inspections and abandonment.
