Project Spotlight: Dam Repairs and Upgrade Designs in Ellis, Kendall, and Navarro Counties, TX

Schnabel Engineering is proud to support the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) in enhancing dam safety and flood resilience across multiple counties in Texas.

Schnabel has held an IDIQ since 2019 with the TSSWCB in which our team has:

  • Provided design services for the repair of six NRCS flood control dams in Ellis County, TX. All six of these repair projects were successfully completed and Schnabel provided engineering and inspection services through construction.
  • Provided design services and spillway upgrade alternatives analyses for six NRCS dams in Ellis, Kendall, and Navarro Counties, TX. All six of these upgrade projects successfully went into construction with five of the six completed and one project in Kendall County nearing completion. Schnabel provided engineering, inspection, and laboratory testing services through construction.
  • Currently providing design services for the repair of four NRCS flood control dams in Kaufman, Van Zandt, and Rockwall Counties, TX.

Key Highlights of the repair and upgrade designs include:

  • New principal spillway pipes and riser structures;
  • Concrete labyrinth auxiliary spillways;
  • Treatment of near surface soils with lime to reduce the plasticity of the soils and reduce the potential for shallow slope failures;
  • Riprap armored wave berms along the upstream slopes of the dams;
  • Riprap lined plunge pools downstream of the principal spillway outlets;
  • Replacement of metalwork/trash guards on the principal spillway riser structures;

Kudos to our project team, led by Jimmy Crowder and Victoria Webber for their dedication to resilient design and public safety.
