Loughberry Lake Dam

Loughberry Lake Dam is a 40-foot-high earthen embankment dam owned and operated by the City of Saratoga Springs, NY. The lake serves as the city’s principal water supply. Located within the city limits, the dam is accessed from NYS Route 50, which forms the dam crest.

Schnabel completed a rehabilitation design for the dam, which includes constructing an upstream stability berm, slip-lining the existing arch principal spillway tunnel, and relocating the principal spillway weir downstream of the rehabilitated principal spillway arch conduit beneath Route 50. This new placement allows the slip-lined principal spillway tunnel to serve as a secondary water supply pipe for the water treatment facility.

The rehabilitation also involves removing and replacing the principal spillway conduits downstream of the principal spillway chamber to alleviate hydraulic constrictions, centrifugally casting the auxiliary spillway CMP conduits with concrete to repair defects and deterioration, and placing a terminal energy dissipation structure for the combined principal and auxiliary spillway conduit discharges. The project is currently being constructed by Winn Construction Services, Inc. of Waterford, NY.
