John Rice Joins Schnabel

We are pleased to announce that John Rice, PhD, PE, GE, has joined Schnabel as a senior technical consultant for our growing Dam and Levee Engineering practice. Based in our Denver, CO office, John brings a wealth of expertise that will enhance our technical excellence and client service.

John has over 33 years of practice and research experience in geotechnical engineering with extensive work focusing on seepage and stability issues for dams and levees. Most recently, John served as an associate professor at Utah State University, where he founded the Earth Structures Laboratory and conducted research on reliability-based analyses of internal erosion potential and laboratory modeling of internal erosion mechanisms. In addition to teaching and research, John has provided expert technical review for numerous clients including the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the U.S. Department of Justice. He has also consulted internationally for agencies in Thailand, China, and the Netherlands.

John is an active member of the United States Society on Dams (USSD), the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI). He served on the USSD Board of Directors from 2015 to 2021 and served as the Chair of the ASCE Geotechnics of Soil Erosion Committee from 2017 to 2023.
