I-95/Cottman Avenue Emergency Response Project Receives AASHTO Grand Prize
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s I-95/Cottman Avenue Emergency Response project received the Grand Prize at the 2024 America’s Transportation Awards competition! This annual competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, highlights the positive impact of state DOT projects on communities nationwide.
Schnabel supported the PennDOT, Buckley & Company, and Aero Aggregates of North America on the successful emergency repair of six lanes of I-95 just north of Philadelphia after the tragic bridge collapse on June 11. Schnabel’s geostructural group performed the design of the temporary, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall utilizing wire baskets and geogrid backfilled with foam glass aggregate made from recycled glass by Aero Aggregates. Schnabel was able to perform this design in under 24 hours, which enabled I-95 to be reopened to traffic in just 12 days!
