Charleston Low Battery Seawall Wins ASCE Technical Merit Award

Congratulations to the City of Charleston, JMT, Gulf Stream Construction and the entire project team for receiving the 2021 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) South Carolina Section Technical Merit Award for the Low Battery Seawall project! The award recognizes an outstanding project or technical innovation toward the profession of Civil Engineering. The project, which involved rehabilitation of the historic seawall along the waterfront in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, was selected for showcasing collaboration, innovation and public stewardship.

Schnabel Engineering provided geotechnical engineering and geostructural design services to the lead designer, JMT. The original seawall was 5,000 feet in length, over 100 years old, and needed repair to sustain wave action from potential hurricanes and tropical storms that are predominant in the region.

The project Phase 1 was completed on time and within budget, allowing effective use of taxpayer dollars. This was accomplished by reusing as much of the substructure as possible, and innovative use of micropiles to strengthen the wall.
