Celebrating Earth Science Week 2025

This year’s theme, Energy Resources for Our Future, underscores the essential role of earth science in creating sustainable energy solutions. At Schnabel Engineering, we apply geoscience every day to help shape projects that advance clean energy.

The Lewis Ridge Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project in Bell County, Kentucky, is a prime example. Situated on lands once mined for coal, the project will transform a historically impacted landscape into a renewable energy asset—providing on-demand power for about 67,000 homes.

Schnabel’s geotechnical and geologic expertise is central to this effort. Our team is conducting geophysical investigations, geologic field reconnaissance, 3D geologic modeling, and settlement evaluations to understand complex subsurface conditions shaped by multiple mined-out coal seams. These earth science insights are critical to ensuring the feasibility and long-term safety of the facility.

By applying earth science to optimize design and unlock renewable energy potential, the Lewis Ridge project demonstrates how geoscience can help reimagine former mine lands, strengthen our power grid, and build energy resources for the future.
