The new ballpark for the Washington Nationals was built on a 25-acre site that included brownfield properties contaminated by leaks from underground storage tanks and petroleum pipelines. Schnabel provided start-to-finish environmental services to the D.C. Sports & Entertainment Commission and the design-build team, avoiding delays or unnecessary costs associated with the environmental impacts.
Our services included performing an extensive site characterization with borings, monitoring wells, and pump testing. We also conducted on-site soils screening to segregate contaminated soils from the non-contaminated, and monitored discharges from dewatering of the site during construction. We successfully dealt with over 30 underground storage tanks, and achieved a certificate of completion for the site from the District’s Department of Energy & Environment Voluntary Cleanup Program.
