In this month’s issue of Hydro Leader, Principal Engineer, Del Shannon, PE discusses his work in dam
rehabilitation and the path that led him to becoming a Senior Vice President of the Dam and Levee
Engineering group at Schnabel.
In a four-page interview starting on page 14, Del explains today’s trends in dam construction and
rehabilitation, the importance of risk-based dam assessments, and the advantages of having a holistic
perspective with design-build that brings design and construction together.
Del has 30 years of experience working in the civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineering fields,
including extensive experience working on concrete and embankment dam safety and dam design.
Del regularly contributes his expertise to local, national and international committees, including serving on
the Roller Compacted Concrete Committees for the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD).
He is also an elected board and executive committee member of the US Society on Dams (USSD),
serves on the ASCE Committee on America’s Infrastructure (CAI) and is a committee member of the
Geotechnical Engineering and Design/Build Subcommittees for the USSD and the Association of State
Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO).
