Specializing in geotechnical, dam, and tunnel engineering services, Schnabel offers small-firm responsiveness and big-firm capabilities, partnering with you through the life of your project. Our designers, innovators, and industry experts have successfully tackled projects in remote locations, challenging environments, and for communities large and small across the U.S. and in over 150 countries.

One thing we’ve learned from over half a century of solving major and minor infrastructure challenges is the value of our professional relationships. We believe the best outcomes result when we serve as a true partner to each client on every project — in building better, together. We’re an ENR Top 200 Design Firm that garners top safety project accolades, and frequently provide engineering services on projects that lead to awards for our clients.

Schnabel at a Glance

Small company values ground our business today just as they did when Jim Schnabel started and operated the company out of his parents’ home in Washington, DC, in 1956. As the first true consulting firm in the Mid-Atlantic region to offer both subsurface investigations and soil and foundation engineering consulting services, Schnabel established itself as the “firm of choice” for geotechnical work in the Washington metro area. As we’ve grown over the years to the national firm we are today, that spirit of innovation continues, with numerous firsts and patents reinforcing our reputation in the industry.
