Geology and Engineering to evaluate natural forces.

Schnabel Engineering performs rock mechanics evaluations and analyses for design of rock slope stabilization systems, new rock slopes, mitigation of abandoned underground excavations, design of tunnels and other underground excavations, and design of foundations. This work begins with rock mass characterization which may include rock outcrop mapping, surface and/or downhole geophysics, rock core drilling, sampling and logging, and laboratory testing. We then perform mathematical modeling and analyses of forces acting on rock, along planes, faults, and around excavations, that might have an impact on your project. Through geomechanics modeling, we then assess the interaction between the rock and the engineered structure to assist in the design of the structure or rock stabilization method.  Field verification of exposed rock mass conditions, performance of rock support systems, groundwater yield, and/or excavation characteristics is a critical extension of our rock mass characterization and design services.

Our rock mechanics services have been applied to:

  • Underground excavation design and stability assessments
  • Mine subsidence assessments and mitigation design
  • Rock tunneling
  • Rock slope stabilization
  • Groundwater flow mapping
  • Evaluation of rippability and excavation methods
  • Foundations (buildings, dams, bridges)
