Project Overview
The project included installation of a high pressure natural gas line regulator and gate station, along with the replacement of approximately 1,000 feet of 4-inch diameter transmission line. Schnabel was initially contracted to inspect the welds at the regulator station using various visual (VT), radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT), and magnetic particle (MT) nondestructive examination (NDE) methods.
When the contractor discovered that the existing welds were visually unacceptable and that a rupture of one weld had occurred, Schnabel conducted a failure analysis of the ruptured weld. Using various tests, including hardness testing, chemical analysis, metallography, tensile testing, and NDE, Schnabel determined that the failure was a result of incorrect welding materials and procedures and recommended the replacement of the line to preclude future failures. Schnabel then provided onsite NDE and monitoring services of that replacement, as well as the regulator and gate station.
