Project Overview
The original Investment Building was a 10-story building with one basement built in the 1920s. Because of the architectural significance of the building, the project was to include preservation of the facades along 15th Street and K Street. Schnabel provided geotechnical engineering for the 12-story replacement building, which included four below-ground levels consisting of an English Basement and three parking levels. Constructing the additional basement levels while preserving the facades presented special challenges and the design included several unusual elements:
- Caisson foundations for the temporary truss frame bracing the facades
- Bracket pile and needle beam underpinning for the facades
- Underpinning pits for support of adjacent buildings
- A hydrostatic slab to eliminate the need for permanent dewatering
- High-capacity shallow spread footings founded in the Potomac Clay
- Waterproofing design to prevent seepage through walls and slab
Schnabel also provided concrete and steel construction material testing and inspection services.
