Project Overview
Persistent seepage and previous failed grouting attempts prompted the owner of this dam to engage Schnabel to perform a geophysical study to identify seepage zones to better target grouting efforts. Schnabel’s geophysical exploration consisted of a self-potential survey within the lake along the upstream side of the embankment and spillway and a cross-hole resistivity survey within the spillway abutment and wing wall. These studies clearly depicted seepage paths, and allowed the design team to develop a strategy to fix the problem at its source.
Schnabel observed the use of low and high mobility grout formulations to stabilize the embankment and reduce seepage through the stone abutment structure. Schnabel also evaluated spillway and abutment stability during spillway design flood conditions (probable maximum flood). We developed conceptual designs for the dam to safely pass the design flood, including rock anchoring of the spillway and construction of anchored cutoff walls through the abutment.
