Groundwater Monitoring
Project Overview
Schnabel performed a site characterization study to delineate the on-site and off-site contamination plume. We delineated the plume and installed permanent monitoring wells in one mobilization. An aquifer test indicated that recovery wells were not suitable for plume recovery and control. Instead, we designed a reaction trench to intercept the plume. Contaminants are removed via air sparging and biodegradation.
A two-dimensional groundwater flow model (ASM for Windows) was used to evaluate the impact on plume migration by a proposed slurry wall. Based on modeled results a 150-foot long and 25-foot deep slurry wall was designed to cutoff the plume and direct all impacted groundwater through the existing trench for treatment (funnel and gate system).
Schnabel prepared design documents and bid packages for Carpenter Company’s use in selecting a contractor. Construction monitoring services were provided to monitor contractor compliance with design requirements. Schnabel also provided long-term groundwater monitoring services to evaluate the continued effectiveness of the remedy.
