Project Overview
Schnabel worked as the geotechnical subconsultant to the George Harms/Frederic R. Harris design-build team for this major NJDOT bridge. The bridge span is about 4,500 feet from abutment to abutment and crosses the Raritan River sandwiched between two existing bridges. Schnabel provided geotechnical engineering services for seismic analysis; foundation design recommendations for piers, abutments, MSE walls, sign structures, and retaining walls; and recommendations for earthwork.
Services on this project also included the design, coordination, and observation of the subsurface exploration. This exploration included drilling test borings on land and water, seismic cone penetrometer testing, dilatometer testing, field vane shear testing, and undisturbed sampling using a piston sampler. Scour impacts on the lateral and uplift capacity of the main pier foundations were evaluated. Soil laboratory testing consisted of classification, unit weight, and shear strength tests.
Schnabel considered a variety of foundation options including drilled shafts on rock and driven pile foundations. Large diameter driven pipe piles with ultimate capacities ranging from 700 to 1,200 kips were selected.
