Project Overview
As a continuation of geotechnical engineering services, Schnabel provided construction phase materials testing services for this Washington Building Congress award-winning project. The 800,000 square foot parking garage includes spaces for up to 2,000 vehicles and has three levels of parking below grade and seven above. The garage also incorporates a new Ground Services Structure adjacent to the structure on the west, as well as a portion of a utility tunnel incorporated in the first level below grade.
During construction, Schnabel’s engineering technicians in the field observed construction materials and confirmed conformance with project plans and specifications. Engineering support from Schnabel’s engineers was required to maintain detailed inspection records for compliance with the Fairfax County Critical Structures Program (FCCS).
Problems encountered during construction with compressive strength required radiographic examination of the concrete deck prior to coring of concrete in order to avoid the post tensioned cables. A program of concrete coring and Windsor probe testing was developed in order to accurately analyze concrete in the field.
