Project Overview
The historic Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia, underwent structural renovations including construction of a new stage and fly bridge, lowering of the existing basement areas, and construction of a new basement level beneath the main orchestra/house level. An addition to the main theater building in the alley area and the area previously occupied an earlier building also was included in the project.
Schnabel performed the geotechnical engineering study for the site, including evaluation of ground water levels and dewatering, and recommendations relating to foundations including auger cast pile walls. Rows of continuous, 12-inch diameter auger cast piles with tiebacks were used to form a retaining structure for the theater’s basement area. Auger cast pile foundations also were used to address the eccentric column loads and for grade separation between the at-grade and basement areas.
Schnabel provided construction observation and testing, including Special Inspections and Condition Surveys.
