Project Overview
Schnabel provided a value alternative design for SPSA's Landstown Transfer Station that resulted in a construction cost saving of over $200,000. Like most refuse transfer stations, a tipping floor and refuse dump pit are necessary. For the flat site at Virginia Beach this required a new 18 ft high embankment. This embankment would result in stresses being applied to various soft soil layers beneath the station.
Because these stresses would result in significant settlements, the original geotechnical consultant recommended surcharging the site and using 100-foot long wick drains to reduce the time of consolidation. Schnabel reviewed the existing data and provided new sampling and testing data to evaluate the design. Based on review of consolidation test data, the wick drain length was shortened to 60 feet and the spacing increased from 3.0 to 3.5 ft. Schnabel also provided construction QA/QC testing and monitoring of surcharge settlements for the project.
